#6 - Parallel Flow / Extra Special Bitter

#6 - Parallel Flow / Extra Special Bitter

Parallel Flow is the 6th release in our 10B410Y project celebrating 10 years of brewing. This is an Extra Special Bitter (meaning it is higher in alcoholic strength beer than 'standard' or 'best' bitter). The beer is deep red in colour with a rich biscuit malt backbone, caramel & toast flavours, aromas of dried fruit and caramelised marmalade - and a satisfyingly bitter finish.

You can see a short video of the making of this beer here.

We've brewed this beer in collaboration with Sandy and Lawrie from StuBrew (Europe's first student run brewery) & Nathan from Architecture, Planning and Landscaping (APL) at Newcastle University.

We have a special place in our heart for StuBrew, as it's where we started our professional brewing journey. Whilst working at Newcastle University, Red supported a team of student volunteer to set up the brewery alongside Dr Chris O'Malley in 2013. We cuckoo-brewed our very first batch of 'Equinox' for sale to pubs on their kit in 2016 which set us on our way for many more pints of F&L being brewed over the following 10 years!

We share a joint passion for putting sustainability into practice across our day-to-day brewery activities. Reducing environmental impact of brewing is a cause which breweries work hard at - Stu Brew continues to undertake all sorts of research projects by degree, masters and PhD students looking into reducing water, chemical and energy usage. Both Team F&L and Team Stu Brew also thrive on exploring exciting new brewing techniques, working with new ingredients and pushing the boundaries of beer through experimentation.

To this day the two breweries continue to support each other and collaborate whenever we get the chance.

Red, Sandy & Nathan have been musing over the recipe for this beer for a couple of years now, it was real pleasure to finally brew it together. Proper strong bitter with a nitro twist!
